The 1913 Lockout Tapestry an ambitious, large-scale, collaborative
visual arts project to commemorate the Dublin Lockout will be on display
at Dublin City Library & Archive, Pearse Street, from Tuesday 17th February - Saturday 28th March 2015. It
consists of panels laid out in a ‘comic book’ style illustrating the
historical event that saw 100,000 people in Dublin facing starvation as a consequence of a conflict between capital and labour forces.
Designed by artists, Cathy
Henderson and Robert Ballagh, produced by 200 adult volunteers and over
60 school children, the tapestry tells the story of the clash of forces
between labour and capital in the fight for union recognition and the
right to collective bargaining resulting in 100,000 people facing
starvation at end of 1913.
This remarkable and unique Irish work of Art consisting of 9 panels
was produced by a diverse range of groups including the Irish Embroidery
Guild, the Irish Patchwork Society, the Irish Countrywomen’s
Association, community activists, trade unionists, school students,
people with disabilities and prisoners.
It was commissioned by NCAD and trade union, SIPTU.
As part of The Decade of Commemorations, the tapestry will be exhibited from Tuesday 17 February to Saturday 28 March at Dublin City Library & Archive in Pearse Street. It will then be on view at Ballyfermot Library during April.
Senior cycle students will find this exhibition of particular interest, with Dublin 1913 - Dublin Lockout and Strike forming part of the senior cycle history syllabus.
Admission to the exhibition is free. (Groups of 12 or more will need to book. Schools groups are particularly welcome).
